Professors from IIT Bombay and IIT Indore Undertake 15-Day Cycling Expedition of the Himalayas

20 Dec 2023

Prof. RaaJ Ramsankaran, a Remote Sensing expert from IIT Bombay, and Prof. Mohd. Farooq Azam, a Glaciologist from IIT Indore, have started a ‘Climate Awareness Ride’ – a respectful exploration of the Himalayas by bicycle. They aim to create awareness about climate change and its impacts on the Himalayan Cryosphere.

The professors started their 15-day cycling expedition on June 17, 2023, from Manali to Khar Dung La Pass to Siachen Base Camp. This journey will require them to navigate the challenging terrains and endure various weather conditions such as snow, rain, and hail – all of which require a combination of physical and mental strength. This journey spans 700 km and includes 5 mountain passes including the highest motorable pass – Khardung La – of the world.

Both professors hope that this cycling expedition will help “educate the general public about climate change and its implications on the Himalayan glaciers” and allow them to learn about the climate change-related water resource issues that the high-altitude communities are facing.
