IIT Bombay’s exceptional PWD facilities have garnered the attention of mainstream media, shining a spotlight on the Institute’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment.

Despite losing both lower limbs in a near-fatal accident six years ago, Ashraf Joya, a 22-year-old BSc graduate from Nagpur successfully enrolled for his Masters at IIT Bombay through the Person With Disability (PWD) quota. Hostel 17, equipped with PWD-friendly amenities like tailored washrooms and accessible dining halls, soon became his new home. Assisted by an electric wheelchair and modified furniture that made manoeuvring easier, Ashraf’s pursuit of independence and education was well supported by IIT Bombay’s provisions for special students. With its dedicated PWD cell, the Institute continues to facilitate an environment where Ashraf’s dream can flourish.
