Prof. Kishore Trivedi is the Fitzgerald Hudson Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor of Computer Science at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, USA. He earned his B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1968, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign in 1972 and 1974 respectively.
Prof. Trivedi joined the faculty of Duke University in 1975 and was asked to teach a course titled “Probability for Computer Science and Engineering.” He soon discovered that no textbook for the subject existed. So, he wrote one called Probability and Statistics with Reliability, Queuing and Computer Science Applications which was published in 1982. Its revision remains widely used even today. He has since published and edited several other books on related topics.
Prof. Trivedi’s research encompasses computer arithmetic, operating systems, queueing networks, reliability modelling, and, most recently, methods to improve software reliability. He has also acted as a consultant for many companies carrying out reliability modelling of their products and has held short courses and tutorials at numerous conferences.
During the course of his teaching career, he has mentored 48 Ph.D. students and an equal number of postdoctoral associates.
Prof. Trivedi is the recipient of many awards and fellowships. He is a Fellow of IEEE and IEEE Computer Society, 1992; the Fitzgerald S. Hudson Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Duke University, Durham, NC, 2000; a Fulbright Visiting Lecturer to India, 2002-2003; the Poonam and Prabhu Goel Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT, Kanpur, 2002-2003; winner of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award, 2008; Doctor Honoris Causa, USMP, Lima, Peru, 2012; the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Fellow hosted by Hiroshima University, 2014; the NordSecMobile Scholar hosted by NTNU in Trondheim, Norway, 2014; Life Fellow, IEEE, 2017; winner of the Distinguished Alumnus Award, Dept. of Computer Science, Univ. of Ill., 2017; Specially Appointed Professor, Hiroshima University, 2017-2020 and winner of the IEEE Reliability Society Lifetime Achievement Award, 2020
