Unveiling Excellence: IIT Bombay’s Alumni Day Sets the Course for the Future

IIT Bombay hosted its annual Alumni Day at VMCC on the campus. Prof. Ravindra Gudi, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Bombay, warmly welcomed attendees to kick off the event. Following this, Prof. S. Sudarshan, Deputy Director (Academic and Infrastructural Affairs), and Prof. K.V.K. Rao, Deputy Director (Finance and External Affairs), IIT Bombay, addressed the gathering, highlighting the Institute’s progress over the years.

In his address, Prof. Sudarshan said, “The success of our alumni in every aspect of life has made us proud, and enhanced IIT Bombay’s reputation all over the world. Our alumni have also been giving back in multiple ways, including record-breaking donations, serving on numerous advisory boards in IIT Bombay, helping make connections between our faculty/ students and industry, and some are contributing directly as faculty, professors of practice, and other roles. We are very grateful for the wonderful support we are getting from our alumni, which will help build IIT Bombay’s infrastructure to a level we can be justifiably proud of, and help us take IIT Bombay to even greater levels of excellence in the years to come.”

Mr. Ravishankar Gedela, CEO of IIT Bombay-DRF, lauded the accomplishments of the alumni community in his speech, acknowledging their ongoing support and contributions to the Institute. Additionally, IIT Bombay unveiled a Donor Wall during the event, recognizing its top donors of 2023. This wall serves as a testament to their generosity and sustained philanthropic support for various causes dear to their alma mater.

LAUNCHING THE GO IITB CAMPAIGN FOR 2023-24

IIT Bombay’s dedication to excellence extends across all aspects of its academic and research endeavours. With a vision of ranking amongst the top universities worldwide, IIT Bombay launched the 3rd edition of its annual fund-raising campaign ‘GO-IIT Bombay’ for the year 2023-2024. The campaign theme, ‘Invest in Excellence. Shape Tomorrow,’ underscores the institute’s dedication to fostering positive change.

This campaign represents a collaborative effort by the Institute to actively involve a broad spectrum of its alumni community. The goal is to harness the collective power of giving, and welcoming contributions—whether substantial or modest—toward various causes that will propel IIT Bombay on its continued journey of excellence.

The Key focal points for this year’s GO IITB campaign include supporting:

–  Advancing Project Evergreen for hostel infrastructure
–  Student Scholarships
–  Contributing to the Institute Development Fund

LEGACY CONTRIBUTIONS

The Silver Jubilee Batch – the class of 1998 pledged a total of Rs. 57 crores towards their Legacy Project while the Golden Jubilee Batch – the Class of 1973 – pledged a total of Rs 7.15 crores to their alma mater towards building up an advanced research facility for EV and establishing research excellence awards for young faculty.

SERVICE AWARDS

This year’s Distinguished Service Award (instituted in 1999) was bestowed on Gajanan Vithal Gandhe (B.Tech., Civil Engineering, 1986). Not only has Mr. Gandhe excelled in his chosen field, but he has also made substantial and lasting contributions to the Institute’s progress. These include being heavily involved in the activities of SINE as an Advisory Board Member. He has also been reviewing and supporting startups for grants through SINE as well as Dana and other companies. Mr. Gandhe has been individually advising many startups in scaling up their ideas and getting grants and has been instrumental in working with IIT Bombay to help set up the E-Mobility Centre of Excellence. The DSA consisted of a certificate, a memento, and an uttaria.

The Chapter Service Awards (instituted during the Diamond Jubilee year celebrations) are given to select alumni who have contributed consistently to the progress of their Chapters and the Institute. The awardees for this year were:

    –  Mr. Kicha Ganapathy (B.Tech., Electrical Engineering, 1967) – Chapter: New York
    –  Mr. Deepak Digambar Thite (M.Tech., Mechanical Engineering, 1996) – Chapter: Pune
    –  Mr. Amit Gupta (B.Tech., Chemical Engineering, 2002) – Chapter: Japan
    –  Ms. Tarana Gupta (M. Design, IDC, 2009) – Chapter: New York

The function was attended by various institute officials, and alumni along with their family members, faculty, staff, and students. Their presence stood as a testament to the deep legacy of the Institute and the unwavering commitment of its alumni. The collaborative atmosphere among the attendees turned the event into a truly memorable and enriching experience.
