Prof. Devavrat Shah is Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Adjunct Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai and Co-Founder and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of Ikigai Labs. Prof. Shah earned his B. Tech. degree (awarded President of India Gold Medal) in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1999 and Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Stanford University in 2004.
Prof. Shah, after completing his Ph.D., joined as Assistant Professor in the Department of EECS at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (in 2005), where he is currently a Full Professor. He was Chief Scientist and Co-Founder of Celect, Inc from 2013 to 2019. He is a Founding Director, Statistics and Data Science Center, MIT (2016- 2020) and Co-Founder, CTO of Ikigai Labs Inc. from 2019. Prof. Shah has made significant contributions to network algorithms and stochastic networks, network information theory, statistical inference and social data processing. Specifically, contributed to theory and practice of scheduling algorithms in communication networks including internet routers, wireless medium access; identified asymptotic communication limits of large wireless networks; developed foundations of distributed “message-passing” and “gossip” algorithms for large-scale statistical inference; and contributed to the theory of social choice and used it to build demand-forecasting technology in retail through retail-tech company Celect (co-founder), which is now part of Nike.
Prof. Shah has received the Test of Time Paper Award Sigmetrics 2019 & 2020, INFORMS Management Science Best Publication Award in 2016, INFORMS Revenue Management and Pricing Section Prize in 2015, Applied Probability Society Best Publication Award in 2012, Erlang Prize in 2010, Sigmetrics Rising Star in 2008, NeurIPS Paper Award in 2008, and Sigmetrics Paper Awards in 2006, 2009 and 2012.
