Mohan Mahadev Kavrie
B.Tech 1971, Civil Engineering
Mr. Mohan Kavrie graduated from IIT Bombay in 1971 and thereafter went to USA to obtain a M.S. in Operations Research. He however was clear about making a career and life only in India and returned immediately after completing his M.S., in 1973, without working a single day in the U.S.

Hailing from a middle-class non-business family and community, he took up a job as a junior officer in a medium sized Company in Mumbai. He worked his way to the top of the organisation in a very short time. However, this Company started sliding in the early eighties and was on the verge of closure by 1986.

The options before Mr. Kavrie were to take up another job or start his own business. Not desiring to once again have to work his way up in a new organisation, he chose to start his own business. He had during his employment come to realise the potential of Nonwoven fabrics and decided to venture into this area.

Destiny and initial financial support from one Mr.Esmailbhai Dhariwala helped him start Supreme Nonwovens Pvt. Ltd. in 1986, with the first plant near Vapi, Gujarat.

Nonwoven fabrics are an important part of Technical Textiles and today constitute almost 30% value of all textile activity in the developed countries. Application areas for Nonwovens are very wide and find end uses on the industrial as well as on the consumer side. Supreme Nonwovens is today a leader in India and among a handful of Nonwoven companies globally that have competence in the entire spectrum of nonwoven technologies. Products made by Supreme find application not only in industrial applications such as high performance filtration media for pollution control systems in core sectors of Cement, Steel and Power, but also as technical interlinings which form the backbone for high performance apparels and shoes. With the impetus on smart materials and textiles, the prospects for Nonwoven industry are bright and newer materials and applications are getting developed every day.

In the mid-90’s the company decided to forward integrate into the manufacturing of automotive interior trims and acoustic insulation components. These materials are typically composites at the heart of which again are nonwoven materials and technologies. Supreme has become a leader in the auto components business too, supplying to practically all the car makers and with components engineered and manufactured by it being present on over 70%of the cars being made in India. The company is consistently recognised and awarded for its competencies in technology, quality and delivery.

The Supreme Nonwovens Group has manufacturing plants at 13 locations across India and provides direct employment to over 1800 persons. He dedicates this Award to Manufacturing and to all those who have braved to take this up in the challenging Indian conditions. As per him, Manufacturing provides opportunities to large number of persons with limited schooling and in many instances coming from families where no person has ever held a full time job. This not only helps his family but the most beneficial outcome is that he is able to provide for and educate his children. This has a multiplier effect that changes whole communities of the under privileged.

The Mission of Kavrie Family is to continue to work and to be able to provide jobs and change lives.
