About the Donor

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), established in September 1970, is responsible for implementing a wide range of environmental legislation in Maharashtra. The MPCB functions under the administrative control of the Environment Department of the Government of Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board Chair was instituted by MPCB to support faculty from the Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay. The Chair Professorship is a recognition of the outstanding research pursued by a faculty member in the domains of environmental technologies and pollution control.

About the Appointee:

Prof. Anurag Garg, Professor, Environmental Science and Engineering Department

Prof. Anurag Garg is currently the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Chair Professor at IIT Bombay, Mumbai.

Prof. Garg completed his B.E. (Civil Engineering) from the University of Roorkee (currently IIT Roorkee). He completed his Ph.D. in 2005 in environmental engineering from the same institute. After acquiring his Doctorate, Prof. Garg worked at Cranfield University, UK, as a Research Officer for two years before joining IIT Bombay in 2007. He was also a Visiting Professor in the School of Water, Energy, and Environment at Cranfield University, UK, during December 2019-2022.

Prof. Garg’s research interests are in the areas of solid waste treatment, resource recovery, sludge management, industrial wastewater treatment, and catalysis. His group has developed decentralized composting systems for wet biodegradable waste from households. He is also working on hydrothermal pretreatment processes for kitchen waste and sewage sludge to improve resource recovery opportunities. A small-scale setup for sludge treatment will be started soon at one of the sewage treatment plants.

His research group works on the treatment of high-strength wastewater streams emerging from distilleries, pulp and paper mills, oil refineries, and textiles using catalytic advanced oxidation processes. He is also working on river and lake rejuvenation projects.

Prof. Anurag Garg has received several prestigious awards over the years which include:

– The IIT Bombay Research Publication Award – 2020

– The Prof. S.P. Sukhatme Award for Excellence in Teaching – 2020

– The Best Paper Award at an International Conference on “Sustainable Waste Management” in 2018 at ANU, Guntur, Vijayawada, A. P., India

– The Nawab Zain Yar Jung Bahadur Memorial Prize bestowed by the Institution of Engineers (India)

– The Best Paper Award at an international conference on “Technologies for Sustainable Waste Management in Developing Countries in 2013 at Vignan University, Guntur

– He was nominated for the INSA-Royal Society of Edinburg (RSE) Bilateral Exchange Programme for Scientists

Prof. Garg continues to serve on several technical committees formed by the state and central government departments including pollution control boards, municipal corporations, etc., and other organizations. He has established several research collaborations with multiple foreign universities. He has more than 175 publications in reputed international and national journals, conference proceedings, and books. In addition, he has been granted two patents.
