Prof. Ravi Gudi Appointed the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Chair Professor

About the Donor

The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Chair Professorship was set up with a generous donation from IIT Bombay alumnus, Mr. Adil Zainulbhai (B.Tech., Mechanical Engineering, 1977). Mr. Zainulbhai retired as Chairman of McKinsey, India, after 34 years of service at the company. Over the last 10 years, Mr. Zainulbhai has collaborated with the CEOs and promoters of some of the major private companies, MNCs, and PSUs, both in India and globally.

The vision of this chair professorship is to promote academic pursuit and research in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

About the Appointee:

Prof. Ravindra D. Gudi, Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering and the Dean ACR (Alumni and Corporate Relations)

Prof. Ravindra D. Gudi is currently the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Chair Professor at IIT Bombay, also a faculty at the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Bombay.

Prof. Gudi earned his B. Tech. and M. Tech. degrees from IIT Bombay and a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta (1995). His research interests lie broadly in process systems engineering and green engineering. They include modelling, optimization, control and fault diagnosis of process systems, and sustainability in industrial practices.

Prof. Gudi has served as a Visiting Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada (1997), and the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Wisconsin- Madison (2003-04), and at the Energy, Environment and Chemical Engineering at Washington University at St. Louis.  Prof. Gudi has published over 170 Scopus-indexed papers and has nine US patents to his credit which are in various areas of process systems engineering.

Over the years, Prof. Gudi has won several awards and accolades in his career. He received the Canadian Commonwealth Fellowship bestowed by the Government of Canada (1991-1995), the Lovraj Kumar Memorial Award for the promotion of industry-academia interaction (July 1998 – January 1999), the Manudhane Applied Research Award (2006), the Herdillia Award for Excellence in Basic Chemical Engineering (2009). He is also the Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

He has been an active consultant to the industry in India and abroad.
